40 Little Things I’m Thankful For

After finishing a Bible Study over Ann Voskamp’s book, One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are, I took a look back over my list. I’m not at 1000 yet, but I will continue until I am. Who knows, I may make it to 2000 some day, or 3000, or…

The big things came easily: good health, my family, my friends. The littles, though, became harder after a while. It’s not because I’m not thankful for them but rather I’m often too busy to notice them, remember them, think on them.

I plan not to be too busy for them ever again for they are truly what make me who I am. These are some of the things that make my heart happy:

  1. My first sip of coffee each morning
  2. Hearing my husband and children laughing together
  3. My cat (okay, my son’s cat, but I love her!) doing her dance on me and then settling in for a snooze in my lap
  4. The precious sound of my granddaughter laughing
  5. Getting teary at a movie and looking over to see my husband tearing up, too
  6. Watching my daughter curl up with her daddy on the couch to watch old movies
  7. My flannel sheets, yes, even in the summer
  8. The surprise of a student’s quick hug
  9. Watching scary movies with a son
  10. Sitting on the porch in the summer with my sister
  11. Remembering a dear friend’s smile and the joy behind it
  12. A beautiful sunset
  13. The look on my granddaughter’s face when she sees her daddy as he walks through the door
  14. The front car of a scary roller coaster
  15. The sound of an acoustic guitar
  16. My dad telling me he loves me more (it’s not true)
  17. In-laws whom I love
  18. The way a son’s eyes crinkle up when he gets really tickled and smiles so huge
  19. Seeing a son knit intricate sweaters, hats, scarves
  20. Watching my sweet, peace-filled daughter win her karate sparring match
  21. Living on the same street as my sister and my brother
  22. Painting on canvas
  23. Riding a scooter
  24. My favorite singer’s voice
  25. Wearing fuzzy socks
  26. Remembering Christmas morning when I was a child
  27. Windows open in the spring
  28. The oranges and reds in the fall leaves
  29. The feel of a fleece jacket
  30. Walking outside in the country
  31. The smell of a horse
  32. Guacamole
  33. Singing 10,000 Reasons
  34. Walking barefoot in clover
  35. Riding on the tailgate of the pickup in the pasture
  36. Petting a puppy’s tummy
  37. Scented markers
  38. Hearing someone say something kind about my children
  39. Christmas morning when all three kids sneak into our room while it’s still dark and climb into bed with us (they still do it and are grown 🙂 )
  40. The heart-swelling, peace-filled joy I know in Christ

Once you get started, it’s hard to stop!
