40 Little Things I’m Thankful For
After finishing a Bible Study over Ann Voskamp’s book, One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are, I took a look back over my list. I’m not at 1000 yet, but I will continue until I am. Who knows, I may make it to 2000 some day, or 3000, or…
The big things came easily: good health, my family, my friends. The littles, though, became harder after a while. It’s not because I’m not thankful for them but rather I’m often too busy to notice them, remember them, think on them.
I plan not to be too busy for them ever again for they are truly what make me who I am. These are some of the things that make my heart happy:
- My first sip of coffee each morning
- Hearing my husband and children laughing together
- My cat (okay, my son’s cat, but I love her!) doing her dance on me and then settling in for a snooze in my lap
- The precious sound of my granddaughter laughing
- Getting teary at a movie and looking over to see my husband tearing up, too
- Watching my daughter curl up with her daddy on the couch to watch old movies
- My flannel sheets, yes, even in the summer
- The surprise of a student’s quick hug
- Watching scary movies with a son
- Sitting on the porch in the summer with my sister
- Remembering a dear friend’s smile and the joy behind it
- A beautiful sunset
- The look on my granddaughter’s face when she sees her daddy as he walks through the door
- The front car of a scary roller coaster
- The sound of an acoustic guitar
- My dad telling me he loves me more (it’s not true)
- In-laws whom I love
- The way a son’s eyes crinkle up when he gets really tickled and smiles so huge
- Seeing a son knit intricate sweaters, hats, scarves
- Watching my sweet, peace-filled daughter win her karate sparring match
- Living on the same street as my sister and my brother
- Painting on canvas
- Riding a scooter
- My favorite singer’s voice
- Wearing fuzzy socks
- Remembering Christmas morning when I was a child
- Windows open in the spring
- The oranges and reds in the fall leaves
- The feel of a fleece jacket
- Walking outside in the country
- The smell of a horse
- Guacamole
- Singing 10,000 Reasons
- Walking barefoot in clover
- Riding on the tailgate of the pickup in the pasture
- Petting a puppy’s tummy
- Scented markers
- Hearing someone say something kind about my children
- Christmas morning when all three kids sneak into our room while it’s still dark and climb into bed with us (they still do it and are grown 🙂 )
- The heart-swelling, peace-filled joy I know in Christ
Once you get started, it’s hard to stop!
