Reflect and Apply:
Once as a young teen, I walked with a group of friends as we explored the amusement park, Six Flags over Texas. One of the friends shoplifted from a store. While the rest of us didn’t steal, we knew he had done it as he told us immediately after. Instead of letting an adult know or separating myself from him, I continued (as did the others) to walk around the park with him. He did end up getting caught and while neither I nor any of the others participated in the shoplifting, we were punished with the same consequences as he was. I remember telling my parents, “But that’s not fair.” My parents let me know right away that the company I keep matters and that if I knew but didn’t tell anyone, I was just as guilty. Sapphira’s place along with her husband, Ananias, makes me think of my ‘guilty by association’ story. Do you think Sapphira should have received the same punishment as Ananias? Have you ever had something similar happen to you? Explain.
In verse 29, Peter and the apostles say they must obey God rather than human beings. Think of a specific time you obeyed human beings rather than God. What was the situation and what were the consequences?
