CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S RETREAT THEME: CAST YOUR BURDENS
We all have burdens to bear. That’s a fact. A popular saying that reminds us is: “Be kind to others, for we don’t know what burdens they are facing.” The joy in the reality of living with burdens is that we can draw strength from the knowledge that God is always there for us yearning to lift us up. Sometimes it’s hard to feel that strength if you try to find it by yourself. Being with friends and others who provide that support can help you ‘cast your burdens’ unto Jesus and to know in your soul that He cares for you. Knowing we are not alone in the most difficult times and having the courage to accept help by being able to share our burdens with our support system is an important lesson to learn.
1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Luke 12:25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Psalm 56:3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Cast Your Burdens Icebreakers:
This fun bingo game entertains and helps everyone learn more about each other.
Tell Me About (In One Sentence):
Go around the group asking each person to answer a specific question (prepare a list of questions ahead of time, such as: Tell me about your family, Tell me about where you were born, etc.) using one sentence. Ask as many questions as you can with the time you have allotted for this activity (A list of pre-made questions will be available in the upcoming Cast Your Burdens Bundle).
Cast Your Burdens Games/Activities:

Have each person write their burden(s) on a small slip of paper and fold the paper in half. In a circle, say a prayer over the burdens and then lift them up to the Lord by sending them up in a sky lantern (these are biodegradable). This is a wonderful closing ceremony activity.
This one is fun and somewhat silly as the ladies must act out their name plus the alliterative adjective they pair with it. Read the directions HERE.

Cast Your Burdens: Small Group Discussion Questions:
1. If you feel comfortable, share one burden you are trying to handle on your own?
2. Who is somebody from your support group of family and/or friends that you can ask for help in handling that burden?
3. What can you do to offer your help to someone else, even if they haven’t asked for help but you can tell something is wrong?

These nail crosses hang perfectly from a chain for a necklace or fit nicely as a pocket cross so that we have a reminder of Christ with us all the time.

Dear Lord, it may sound strange to say thank you for giving us burdens to bear. However, without our personal burdens, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to draw closer to you for strength and support. Thank you for always being there for us, urging us to cast our burdens unto you, even as we struggle as we try to handle them on our own. Help us to remember that you work through our friends and our support group to provide strength and encouragement. When a friend is there with us through a difficult time, you are there as well. What a special gift from you. Help us to be able to receive that gift when we need it and to pass it on when we see someone else in need. May sharing this time together during this retreat rejuvenate the ladies here and may we take that renewed energy out into the world. Amen.
