Throughout the Bible, we read many examples of how God speaks to individuals. It’s hard to imagine that He still speaks to us today in modern times, but He does.
In my experience and from those I’ve heard from, God’s voice doesn’t come audibly every time. In fact, I believe that’s rare. Instead, He speaks to us in various other ways which we focus on in the God Speaks Still retreat theme.
I’ve put together this list of scriptures to help you know when God speaks to you. They go perfectly with the God Speaks Still retreat theme, and you might also like to keep them handy as reference for yourself. You’ll find a link to print them at the end of this post.

6 Ways God Speaks to Us in Present Day
God Speaks through His Word
The Bible is one of the oldest ways God speaks to us. Include Bible reading time daily in order to stay close to Him.
…through Others
We are the hands and feet of Jesus. God frequently speaks to us through the loving words and actions of others. What a blessing it is to know we can share Him with others through us, too!
…through Prayer
Prayer connects us with God and allows us to not only speak to Him but to hear Him as well. Take time when you pray to listen. You’ll be pleased with what you hear!
…through Nature
It’s impossible to look at a beautiful sunrise or sunset and not understand the magnificence of God.
…through Coincidences
Have you ever had those perfect coincidences that happen and known God orchestrated it all? The book, God Winks, addresses these coincidences. I enjoyed the book and think you would, too.
…through His Voice
I do believe God still speaks audibly even though I haven’t heard His voice externally. He’s just so much bigger than I can imagine, that I have faith He can and will speak that way when He needs to.
What Happens When God Speaks to Us?
Something new is created
When we take time to listen to God, something new blossoms with in us. It’s hard to name it exactly, but it’s all wrapped up in His peace, love, and grace.
Fellowship is formed
Communication is a two-way street. When we talk with God and listen as God speaks with us, our connection grows stronger. (Read 1 John 1)
Peace and belonging reside within us
Long after God speaks, all of the blessings remain within us.
