October Prayer Journal Prompts
When my kids were small and I drove them to school, we sang This is the Day the Lord Has Made every morning. I didn’t set out intentionally to do this, but after singing it over a couple of days, my kids began asking for it. It became tradition.
Now, even when my grown kids are home, if we head anywhere in the car, they want to sing it. I don’t know if they sing it on their own when they’re not with me, but my heart fills with joy when they remember and want to sing it still with me.

Now that my youngest is 19 and in college and my boys are out on their own, I continue to try to sing praise each morning on my way to work. This makes me feel at peace and ready to take on the day as I know Christ is with me.
Now, before you are too impressed, I need to admit that it is not always easy to spend the few-minute drive to work in praise and prayer! My phone syncs automatically to my car radio and often my playlist begins before I think to turn the volume down.
When Styx (I’m an 80’s child; what can I say?) comes through the speakers, I immediately want to crank it up and sing along. It takes a super major intentional effort to turn them off and spend time with God instead.
Sometimes I think, “Well, what will it matter?” (if I listen to Styx or something else on my 80’s rock playlist). But I know the answer to that. It won’t really matter, but it will matter. Without spending the time focusing on Jesus, I have less peace in my day. Less patience. Less understanding. Less love.
When I sing This is the Day and then pray the rest of the way, I’m more grounded in Him and my whole day goes better.

This intentional effort helps in many ways and not just with my morning drive. On days I don’t feel like it, I still make myself start the day at home before my shower reading my Bible.
Sometimes it’s just a verse and sometimes a whole chapter, but the important thing is that I open it up and read. Then, I write in my prayer journal.
One of the things I began doing to help me with ideas in my prayer journal was to come up with prompts for the whole month ahead of time. That way, when I didn’t have anything immediately on my heart, I still had focus.
I began sharing my monthly prayer journal prompts with you and have received positive feedback. I’m thrilled you find them helpful!
The October prayer journal prompts are ready. Special thanks to my sister, Lori, for writing the prompts this month! I pray they focus you on Him and help your days be full of peace, love, and understanding.
